Teach with us

Build your teaching practice in a fully equipped Classical Pilates studio.

Urban Pilates is a fully equipped Gratz Classical Pilates studio in the Overlook neighborhood of North Portland. Since 2010, our studio has been a home for thoughtful, rigorous, individualized Pilates instruction.

We are always interested in connecting with Classical Pilates teachers who want to grow with the studio, work with committed clients, and teach the full method in a professional, supportive environment.

Our primary interest is in hiring teachers who would like to become part of the Urban Pilates teaching team. This includes experienced instructors as well as newly certified Classical instructors who are ready to keep learning, practicing, and developing within a supportive studio environment.

We are also open to limited studio rental for independent instructors who already have their own clients and maintain an independent teaching practice outside of Urban Pilates.

We Are Especially Interested in Teachers Who Want to Grow With Us

Urban Pilates has room to expand, but we grow intentionally. We are looking for teachers who understand that a strong schedule is built over time through consistency, trust, and excellent teaching.

If you are looking for a Classical Pilates studio where you can become known, build relationships, and develop a meaningful weekly schedule, we would love to hear from you.

Teach at Urban Pilates

Urban Pilates can be a strong professional home for teachers who want to grow their practice, build lasting client relationships, and become part of a thoughtful Classical Pilates community.

Our studio has a strong reputation, an established client base, authentic Gratz apparatus, and room to grow. We are especially interested in teachers who are looking for a place to put down roots, develop consistent weekly hours over time, and continue growing as both teachers and practitioners.

That said, we are not a high-volume fitness studio where a full schedule appears overnight. Building a strong client schedule takes patience, consistency, communication, and a willingness to grow with the studio.

For the right teacher, there is real opportunity here.

As we add more teacher availability, we are able to offer more private sessions, semi-private sessions, and small group classes to new and existing clients. In other words, teacher availability helps create client availability. The studio can grow when we have the right people in place to support that growth.

This may be a good fit if you:

  • Want to teach as part of an established Classical Pilates studio
  • Are newly certified and looking for the right studio environment to keep growing
  • Are interested in building a consistent weekly schedule over time
  • Value high-quality instruction over high-volume turnover
  • Enjoy working with clients long term
  • Are comfortable teaching private sessions, semi-private sessions, and small group classes, or are ready to build confidence in those formats
  • Want access to a fully equipped Gratz studio
  • Are reliable, professional, communicative, and self-motivated
  • Understand that strong schedules are built through consistency, trust, and patience

Our ideal teacher has comprehensive Classical Pilates training, a strong personal practice, and a clear respect for the method. We welcome teachers who are still growing in experience, provided they are committed to continued study, mentorship, and teaching from a shared Classical foundation.

Because our clients may work with multiple teachers, we need instructors who can teach from that shared foundation while still bringing their own intelligence, personality, and eye to the work.

Urban Pilates is not trend-based Pilates. We are a Classical studio focused on strong fundamentals, progression, precision, and the full system.

Why Classical Training Matters Here

Urban Pilates is a Classical Pilates studio, and that shared foundation matters.

Our teachers may each have their own personality, eye, rhythm, and teaching style, but we need to be working from the same method. Clients at Urban Pilates often work with more than one teacher over time, whether through private sessions, semi-private sessions, group classes, substitute teaching, schedule changes, or special events.

For that to work well, our teachers need a common language and a shared understanding of the Classical system.

We are looking for instructors who can teach within the full Classical Pilates method, respect the traditional order and apparatus, and understand how one session connects to the next. This allows us to support clients more consistently and share responsibility for their progress as a teaching team.

At Urban Pilates, clients should feel that they are being held by the studio as a whole, not just by one individual teacher.

That does not mean every teacher teaches exactly the same way. It means we are all working from the same roots.

What It Means to Build a Schedule Here

When a new teacher joins Urban Pilates, the schedule usually develops gradually.

We may begin with a few available teaching blocks, private client referrals, semi-private opportunities, or a small group class. From there, we work together to build consistency.

A growing schedule may include:

  • Private sessions with new and existing Urban Pilates clients
  • Semi-private sessions with matched clients
  • Small group Classical Pilates classes
  • Substitute teaching opportunities
  • Additional hours as demand grows

Teachers who are patient, consistent, and committed to the studio culture tend to build the strongest schedules.

We are especially interested in teachers who want to be part of the studio long enough to become known, trusted, and established within the Urban Pilates community.

A Place to Grow as a Teacher

Urban Pilates is not only a place to build a client schedule. It is also a place to build your own Pilates practice.

We want teachers who are still students of the work.

A strong teaching practice is connected to a strong personal practice, ongoing study, and regular mentorship. We value teachers who continue to train, ask questions, refine their eye, deepen their understanding of the method, and stay connected to other Classical Pilates instructors and mentors.

Urban Pilates offers daily teacher workouts Monday through Thursday at 1:00 PM. These workouts give teachers a regular opportunity to practice, observe, ask questions, stay connected to the work, and continue developing within the studio environment.

Throughout the year, Urban Pilates also hosts workshops, mentorship opportunities, and teacher-focused learning experiences. Some of these are shared publicly, but many are offered only within our teacher community.

Teachers at Urban Pilates are expected to maintain their own Pilates practice, train regularly with other Classical instructors or mentors, and pursue continuing education on an ongoing basis.

This is part of what keeps the teaching sharp, the studio culture alive, and the work honest.

Employment vs. Independent Rental

Our preferred path is to hire teachers as part of the Urban Pilates team.

This is the best fit for teachers who want to work with Urban Pilates clients, teach on the studio schedule, and build regular weekly hours through the studio.

Independent studio rental is different. Rental is intended for instructors who already operate their own separate teaching practice, work in other locations, manage their own clients, and simply need access to a professional Classical Pilates studio.

If you are looking to build a meaningful schedule primarily at Urban Pilates, an employee teaching position is likely the more appropriate path.

Independent Studio Rental

Urban Pilates offers limited studio rental opportunities for approved Pilates instructors with comprehensive Classical training.

This option is designed for teachers who already have their own clients and maintain an independent teaching practice outside of Urban Pilates. Rental may be a good fit for instructors who teach in multiple locations, run their own business, and need access to a fully equipped Classical studio for occasional or recurring client sessions.

Studio rental may be a good fit if you:

  • Already have your own private clients
  • Work at other studios, facilities, or teaching locations
  • Maintain your own independent business
  • Set your own rates and collect your own payments
  • Manage your own scheduling and client communication
  • Carry your own professional liability insurance
  • Need access to authentic Gratz apparatus
  • Want a quiet, professional studio space for private or duet sessions

As an independent renter, you are responsible for your own clients, scheduling, payment collection, taxes, insurance, business operations, and professional liability coverage. Urban Pilates provides access to the studio and apparatus by approval and scheduled rental agreement.

Independent studio rental is not intended to function as employment with Urban Pilates or as a primary full-time teaching arrangement at the studio.

If a teacher wants to work primarily through Urban Pilates, build a larger weekly schedule here, or teach Urban Pilates clients, we will discuss whether an employee teaching position is the better fit.

Studio Rental Rates

Studio rental is available by approval only and must be scheduled in advance. Rates vary depending on group size.

  • Private Session Rental
    $35 per hour
For one instructor working with one client.

  • Duet or Semi-Private Rental
    $50 per hour
For one instructor working with two clients.

  • Small Group Rental
    $70 per hour
For one instructor working with three to five clients.

  • Full Studio Rental
    $100 per hour
For groups of six or more participants, or any rental that requires exclusive use of the studio.

  • Teacher Practice Rental
    $30 per hour
For approved certified instructors who want to use the studio for their own personal Pilates practice. This rate is for self-practice only and does not include teaching clients.

  • Recurring Rental Blocks
Available by request for instructors who plan to rent consistently each week. Recurring arrangements are dependent on studio availability and must remain within Urban Pilates’ independent rental guidelines.

Rental Requirements

To rent studio space at Urban Pilates, instructors must provide:

  • Proof of comprehensive Pilates certification
  • Proof of current professional liability insurance
  • Current contact information
  • Business name or LLC information, if applicable
  • Confirmation that they maintain an independently established teaching practice
  • Agreement to Urban Pilates studio policies, equipment care standards, and scheduling procedures

Classical Pilates training and experience on Gratz apparatus are strongly preferred.

All renters are expected to manage their own clients, collect their own payments, set their own teaching rates, and communicate directly with their clients. Urban Pilates does not schedule, supervise, train, or manage independent renters as studio employees.

Rental availability is limited and approved on a case-by-case basis.

Who We Are Looking For

We are looking for teachers who want to be part of a shared Classical teaching environment.

You may be a good fit if you are:

  • Comprehensively trained in Classical Pilates
  • Comfortable teaching across the full apparatus system
  • Interested in working as part of a teaching team
  • Able to share clients with other Classical instructors while maintaining continuity in the work
  • Serious about teaching, but warm and approachable with clients
  • Comfortable working with different bodies, ages, levels, and limitations
  • Interested in long-term client development
  • Committed to your own personal Pilates practice
  • Actively engaged in mentorship, continuing education, or regular study with other Classical teachers
  • Professional, punctual, and communicative
  • Careful with shared equipment and studio space
  • Excited to teach in a fully equipped Classical environment

Urban Pilates is a good fit for teachers who want to grow both professionally and personally within the method. We are looking for people who want to teach, practice, study, collaborate, and become part of a serious but supportive Classical Pilates community.
